Centurion acquired Baltic House, a landmark Grade II listed property in the heart of Cardiff Bay, when it was an under-utilised office building with significant heritage value. Originally constructed circa 1915 to serve the city’s shipping and coal-export industries, the building had since housed a variety of commercial and voluntary sector occupiers. Recognising its architectural importance and prime location opposite the historic Coal Exchange, Centurion led a comprehensive redevelopment to secure its long-term future and bring new life to this iconic structure.
The scheme includes the conversion of the existing office building into 29 apartments, the construction of a new six-storey building to the rear providing 31 additional apartments, and the addition of a one-storey rooftop extension to the original structure. In total, the development delivers 48 high-quality apartments, comprising 41 one-bedroom, 17 two-bedroom, and 2 three-bedroom units. The project also provides 8 on-site parking spaces, including 2 dedicated disabled bays, as well as ground-floor cycle storage and locker facilities to promote sustainable living.
Throughout the transformation, Centurion ensured the preservation of the historic façade and key architectural features of Baltic House, combining sensitive restoration with contemporary design. The result is a striking blend of old and new that celebrates the building’s maritime heritage while contributing to the ongoing regeneration of Cardiff Bay.
